FamilySearch.org is the official genealogical website run and maintained by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. FamilySearch is currently the industry leader in regards to the amount of records they publish for online use. They are able to publish records quickly due to the amount of volunteers they have indexing records. Although FamilySearch is run by the LDS church they allow everyone, regardless of their faith, to use and access the records. FamilySearch boasts an easy-to-use interface and it's customizable. The LDS church is constantly updating and upgrading the website so it is as user-friendly as possible. It has also partnered up with some the other biggest genealogical websites currently available through a partner access program; members of the LDS church can get free accounts for ancestry.com, findmypast.com, myheritage.com, and americanancestors.org (the website for the New England Historic Genealogical Society). If FamilySearch does not have access to the record, they will give you the web address for the website that does have access to it.
Even though the LDS church has made FamilySearch.org one of the best genealogical sites currently available, fans of the website have still found numerous ways to enhance their experience. There are a number of Google Chrome extensions that have now become mainstays in order to better interact with the FamilySearch website. Among the most well-known and the ones covered in this book are Hope Chest, Find-a-Record, and RootsSearch. Along with these extensions we will also cover how to install and use recordseek.com's Tree Connect bookmarklet to create sources from any website and attach it to your FamilySearch family tree.
FamilySearch allows users to add pictures, stories, documents, and audio clips to each individual in the family tree, which helps to really flesh them out and make them seem much more like a real person. Even though FamilySearch.org is an easy website to use, it still provides numerous resources for beginning and advanced genealogists to continue to learn. They are constantly posting different how-to videos on their learning center video library page (available on their website as a free service). They also have an impressive catalog search feature which not only allows you to search all of the online resources, but also the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City—this includes their books and microfilms. In addition to the main Family History Library, the LDS church also runs over 5,000 local family history centers all over the world that are staffed by knowledgeable volunteers who can give you face-to-face help, answering your questions regarding FamilySearch. Finally it is the only website authorized by the LDS church to reserve and print LDS temple ordinances.
